Dress Code Rules Explained: Smart Casual, Cocktail, Black Tie, & White Tie Dress Codes

Whether heading to a work party, a wedding, or a birthday, formal attire rules can often trip us up. Convoluted or vague dress code rules make dressing for these events difficult, shrouding the event in needless mystery. Here at Karen Millen, we have simply had enough of asking around for outfit inspiration and wondering whether we’re making the right choices when it comes to the formal attire rules.

Read on for a breakdown of smart casual fashion for ladies, cocktail dress attire, black tie dress code rules, and white tie attire for ladies.

Smart Casual Dress Code Outfits

Perhaps the most common dress code: smart casual. But how smart, and how casual are we meant to dress for these events?

Well, what is a smart casual dress code?

Fortunately, almost anything can work for a smart casual dress code. Smart denim and a blouse, jumpsuits, midi dresses, blazers, anything smarter than leggings or tracksuits can work for a smart casual event.

When the classic jeans-and-a-nice-top combination does not feel like enough, but a dress feels like too much, consider a co-ord set for smart casual outfits with an impact. Sequins are perfect for party season and special events, whereas leather adds an edge to any look. Classic tailoring can be paired with a crisp, white T-shirt to maintain a more casual edge. An eye catching pattern carried across multiple pieces creates a cohesive look that is certain to turn heads.

Cocktail Dress Attire

For parties that require something a little special, cocktail dress codes are often used. But what is cocktail attire? And how does it differ to smart casual, and the more formal dress codes after it?

What is Cocktail Dress Attire?

On the spectrum of party dress codes, the cocktail dress code falls between smart casual and black tie. Think of elevated dresses, but not necessarily formal. Low cuts and leg splits are certainly allowed, but items like jeans, T-shirts, and jumpers are not acceptable. Party dresses, wedding guest style dresses, and your go-to occasion wear is perfect for a cocktail dress code.

Midi dresses are ideal for cocktail dress attire, as the length makes them perfect for any eventuality, and a unique neckline like a squared, strappy, or bandeau neckline adds enticing detail. Any silhouette can work for this dress code, from slinky and figure hugging to flared and dramatic.

White Tie Attire

Also known as “full evening dress” or “evening tails”, white tie is the most formal dress code. It is typically used at formal events or events with high class attendees - it is famously used at events such as Royal Ascot.

How do you dress for a white tie dress code?

White tie attire for women is a little less strict. As a general rule, dresses should be floor length, and accessories should be opulent and sophisticated. A low cut neckline is allowed if the rest of the white tie apparel is elevated and elegant, so feel free to reach for something a little more daring. Long gloves and evening shoes are also sometimes required, so be certain to check this with your host or venue.
